In Zeiten klammer Schulklassen und fehlender kommerzieller Alternativen ist es immer gut einen Überblick über den Markt der Open-Source Lösungen für den Bildungseinsatz zu haben.
Wie finde ich die passende Plattform?
Vom Konzept her nehmen sich die Kandidaten nicht viel; sie “digitalisieren” den Schulalltag und liefern die passenden Werkzeuge. Manche verfügen über eine größere Entwickler-Community, andere verwenden unterschiedliche Technologien. Generell gilt. Mit der Funktionalität steigt der Bedarf der administrative Aufwand. Wer ein Komplexes System will hat also mit einer längeren Anlaufphase zu rechnen. Der Funktionsumfang der jeweiligen Plattform hängt dabei vom Alter des Open-Source Projektes und der Größe der Entwickler-Gemeinde zusammen und hier hat Moodle einiges an Erfahrung in die Waagschale zu werfen. Es gilt aber auch die alte Binsenweisheit “was Sinn macht wird sich durchsetzten.” Auf lange Sicht gesehen sind die Unterschiede zwischen den Plattformen eher gering, das sie ja alle den gleichen Einsatzort als Ziel haben, die Abbildung des Schulbetriebes im Netz. Welches man nun einsetzten sollte ist “Geschmackssache”, so wie die Frage ob PC vs. MAC.
Über den Tellerrand geschaut
Wer jedoch auch über neue Unterichtskonzepte nachdenkt brauch ein flexiblere Lösung, keinen vordefinierten Werkzeugkasten sondern funktionale Rahmendebingungen, ein Framework, mit denen diese Konzepte realisiert werden können. Bildlich gesprochen: “Wenn ihr Küchenausstatter nur Bratpfannen im Angebot hat, können sie keine Suppe machen.” Daher braucht man Technologien die nicht auf den Schulbetrieb fokussiert sind, sonder auf das was in einer Schule passiert, nämlich kommunizieren, Bildung von (sozialen) Gruppen, erarbeiten von Wissen, präsentieren von Wissen und der Dialog darüber. Hier liefern WordPress MU mit der Erweiterung Buddypress den nötigen Rahmen.

Moodle

Dokeos
Dokeos is one of the largest and most recognized companies dedicated to open source Learning Management Systems. Its main product is a SCORM compliant open source learning suite used by multinational companies, federal administrations and universities in some 60 countries for a total of 1,297,000 users. Dokeos operates on a professional open-source business model based on open code, community development, professional consulting, quality-assurance services, and subscription-based customer support. |
Claroline
Claroline is a collaborative eLearning and eWorking platform (Learning Management System) released under Open Source license (GPL). It allows hundreds of organizations worldwide (universities, schools, companies, associations,…) to create and administer courses and collaboration spaces through the web. The platform is used in more than 80 countries and is available in more than 30 languages. |
Ilias

Sakai
Sakai is a community of academic institutions, commercial organizations and individuals who work together to develop a common Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE). The Sakai CLE is a free, community source, educational software platform distributed under the Educational Community License (a type of open source license). The Sakai CLE is used for teaching, research and collaboration. Systems of this type are also known as Course Management Systems (CMS), Learning Management Systems (LMS), or Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). |
Olat
Olat is the acronym for Online Learning And Training. It is a web application – a so called Learning Management System that supports any kind of online learning, teaching, and tutoring with little didactical restrictions. OLAT is free software/open source, and has been developed since 1999 at the University of Zürich and won the MeDiDa-Prix in the year 2000. With version 3.0 the system has been completely rebuilt and is now available as a component oriented application developed in the Java programming language. OLAT has support for various E-learning standards such as IMS Content Packaging, IMS QTI and SCORM. |
WordPress MU
WordPress supports one weblog per installation, though multiple concurrent copies may be run from different directories if configured to use separate database tables. WordPress Multi-User (WordPress MU, a.k.a. WPMU) is a fork of WordPress created to allow simultaneous blogs to exist within one installation. WordPress MU makes it possible for anyone with a website to host their own blogging community, control, and moderate all the blogs from a single dashboard. WordPress MU adds eight new data tables for each blog. WordPress MU’s logo uses the Greek letter Mu (μ) because of its name’s similarity to the name of the platform. |
Buddypress
BuddyPress is based on the popular Open Source blog engine WordPressMU, and is itself a collection of plugins and themes that allow the system developer to create a Social Network environment around an installation (on either the LAMP or WAMP platforms) with relatively little technical knowledge. Although not as elaborate as Facebook, Bebo or MySpace, BuddyPress is ideally suited for small-scale networks around niche ideas/interests. It both inherits and extends upon the integral functional elements of the WordPress engine including themes, plugins and widgets. |
